Chapter Ten
A Shoulder To Cry On
Hard to believe, I know, but sometimes we are looked upon as agony aunts or even expected to give out advice. One guy that springs to mind came through late one night when I was with premium rate lines. At first, he was amazed I was a real person. He thought he’d found a recorded story line.
“Hello, Jolene speaking...” My groggy voice greeted him. Well, I was asleep, which is natural at three in the morning.
“Oh, I didn’t expect anyone to be there. I thought I’d got a recorded message.”
“I can assure you, I’m not. I’m really real.”
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you, I thought it was a recording I was going to be listening to.”
“It’s okay, that’s what I’m here for, to chat.”
“No, I’ll go. I just wanted to listen to someone talking dirty.”
“Well, you can, that’s me. It’s what I do for a living, you know.” Even half asleep I could tell from his voice there was something amiss.
I know for a fact, from some of the guys I’ve spoken to on the PRLs, that most of the other girls doing the chat lines wouldn’t talk about anything but sex. Which always amazed me, I mean you still get paid, no matter what. Me, I’m happy to talk about anything. Yes, I love the sex chat. But it didn’t bother me either way what they spoke about. For the most part, with PRLs a lot of lonely guys would ring the chat lines, after all that’s what we were to them, someone to chat to. Some used to say, it’s nice to hear a woman’s voice at the end of the day. Some would tell you their life story. They all said the same when they came through to me; that they’d listened to the messages and liked the sound of my voice. I listened to some of the messages, at the beginning, just to get some idea of what to say. Most of them were blonde, a few brunettes, but not one was a red-head. I wanted to be different. So I used the ‘Jolene’ in the Dolly Parton song. Sometimes wish I hadn’t. The amount of callers who’d come through singing, ‘’Jolene’. This one time there was a whole gang of lads came on singing it. They were on speaker phone, they said. They were all laughing at the end of the rendition and so was I. It’s funny, though. All my life people told me have their troubles. At the age of sixteen it started, perhaps I’m a good listener. Of course, when I became a barmaid I was in the perfect place for that job, too. So when guys came through just to talk, I’d just listen. And, I guess, that’s what must have happened with this guy. He must have felt subconsciously, I was someone he could talk to. Now, back to him.
Silence over the phone prompted me to ask, “What’s the matter?”
“I still can’t get over the fact it’s not a recording.
